Suddenly some of you might be wondering why we are promoting this event and what is the link with Reggae music. If this is the first time you’ve heard about Dibango’s until now, keep on reading. You’ve probably heard his music without knowing it before.
Born Emmanuel N’Djoké Dibango in Cameroun, in 1933, Manu Dibango is a saxophonist, and one of the greatest legend of African Jazz/World music. He started his musical career in France during the mid-50’s, and had his first international breakthrough during the early 70’s.
He recorded his first album “Saxy Party” for Mercury in 1969. A couple years later, in 1972, he recorded “Soul Makossa,” which is probably the record that had the biggest impact on music on an international level. Indeed, this song has been covered by Michael Jackson in 1983, and more recently by Rihanna.
Manu Dibango also collaborated with the duo of Reggae/Dancehall producers Sly & Robbie, who we don’t need to introduce to you, on his album “Gone Clear.” His discography is quite incredible, it goes from Jazz to Funk, including a little bit of Reggae.
