Despite the covid-19, we have taken a break this summer. Now that the time to go back to work is well due, we have gone through this summer’s releases, and sorted a short selection. You may click on the the art covers in the gallery below to jump directly to the album.
Al Campbell – Universal Love (Peckings)

This summer, Al Campbell released “Universal Love” under Peckings Records. The album has a sort of raw finish like a demo album. Despite that, it sounds pretty goods. Al Campbell voiced only old-school riddims.
Midnight Riders – Meets Naram Rhythm Section (Red Robin Records)

Winston Powell best known as Midnight Riders teamed up with New Zealand’s rub-a-dub producer Naram to release the LP “Midnight Riders meets Naram Rhythm Section” under Red Robin Records this summer. The production is quite classic and well executed. So, overall, the album sounds quite pleasant to the ear, especially songs like “She’s Gone Away,” and “Rebel In Disguise” voiced on a recut of the “Easy Take It Easy Riddim.”
Luciano – The Answer (Oneness Records)

In collaboration with Oneness Records, Luciano released a Modern Roots Reggae album titled “The Answer.” Even though this album does not bring anything new to the Reggae scene, it sounds pretty good overall. All the riddims are well produced, and the mixing/mastering is on point. As usual Luciano‘s vocals are on point.
Protoje – In Search of Lost Time (In.Digg.Nation)
Last summer, Protoje released his 5th studio album “In Search of Lost Time,” produced by In.Digg.Nation.
In songs like “Same So,” Protoje has a kind of different flow than usual as he is trying to sing a little more instead of deejaying.
The album is mostly Reggae Hip Hop-oriented, and pretty well produced, as one could expect from In.Digg.Nation.
Even though this album doesn’t sound as fresh, and good as “The 8 Year Affair” or “Ancient Future,” it’s probably one of the best albums released this summer. It features a couple good songs such as “Like Royalty,” featuring Popcaan, and “Switch It Up,” featuring Koffee.
Steppers Riddim (24/7 Music Production LLC)

This summer, the Virginia-based label 24/7 Music Production LLC produced the various-artist Modern Reggae compilation “Steppers Riddim.” The riddim mostly features unknown artists. Yet, that doesn’t mean it is not good. Besides, it also features Teflon, and a pretty good track by Perfect Giddimani entitled “World We Living In.”
Elephant Man ft. Breeza – Watch Watch (Energy God)
In collaboration with Breeza, Elephant Man releases a brand-new and self-produced modern Dancehall single titled “Watch Watch.” As usual, Ele manages to voice a chorus that matches the riddim’s lead synth. This song isn’t the best club banger he has ever put out. Yet, it sounds alright, and different in a way.
