Kabaka Pyramid at New Morning in Paris: SOLD OUT!

For the past couple of weeks, Kabaka Pyramid has been touring Europe in order to promote his latest Grammy award winning album “The Kalling.” Last night, March 22nd, 2023, the New Morning welcomed for the very first time the Jamaican artist, who had not performing in the city of light since the covid crisis struck. For the occasion, the venue was packed as the show was sold out. Pictures of the show are available on Facebook.

Opening show: Rawb

Before Kabaka Pyramid got on stage, a French Hip Hop/Dancehall artist from Reunion Island opened the show. Alongside his sound engineer, who also happens to be his producer, Rawb delivered a steady performance. He demonstrated his versatility as he alternated between toasting and rapping on beats and riddims of different flavours. Pictures of the show are available on Facebook.

Full of energy

Kabaka delivered a 90 minute show full of energy. After an instrumental intro, the Jamaican hopped on stage dressed all black, and wearing a red, gold and green scarf. He started with the hit song “Warrior,” followed by “My Time,” by the “None Shall Escape The Judgment Riddim,” and “Ready Fi Di Road.”

Apart from his classic hits, he also performed more recent songs such as 2022 single “Rock Mi Nice,” or “Stand Up,” which is featured on his latest album. At times, he would take a hint at his fellow artists such as Chronixx or passed legends of Reggae like the great Bob, by covering their songs. He also begged up Peter Tosh before performing his version of “Mystik Man.”

Old school style

Backed by a solid band, he alternated between modern Reggae with songs like “Herb Defenda” on the “Cultivator Riddim” and old  school Reggae  with songs like “Nice Up The Dance” on the “Real Rock Riddim.” He went on with the old school vibe and performed “Police in Helicopter,” and “Night Nurse.”

Kabaka invited German female artist Sara Lugo to join him on stage. Together, they performed “High & Windy.”

Inna Dancehall style

After this short interlude, they turned up the vibe inna a Dancehall style with cover of “Ring The Alarm,” a medley on the “Stalag Riddim.” Then, Kabaka switched places with his bassist who took the mic. He performed a couple 90’s Dancehall classics such as “Murder She Wrote,” & Pliers– “Walk Like Champion,” “Too Bad,” and “Driver”.

Kalling for an encore

Kabaka‘s musician quickly ran back on stage to hype up the crowd, before the Jamaican artist himself returned for an encore. After performing the hit song “Can’t Breathe” off the album “Kontraband,” Kabaka delivered a couple songs featured on “The Kalling” and wrapped up the show with the eponymous track.
