The Skatalites @ L’Paille à Sons [06.10.2023] Report

The Skatalites @ L'Paille à Sons 2023

The Skatalites performed at the 9th edition of L’Paille à Sons Festival in Chartres, France, on Saturday June 10th. Unlike the day before, the weather was rather warm and sunny. It was the third time we saw them live, and it felt quite nice to be outdoor for once in a while.

Larry McDonald, who would celebrate his 85th earth strong the next day, accompanied the band on percussion, and sang a couple tunes. Two young recruits, Anant Pradhan (Sax/Flute) and Okiel McIntyre (Trompet) had also joined the band.

Except Doreen Schaeffer, one of the founding members of the original band, the other members of the band were there: Val Douglas (Bass), Vin Gordon (Trombone), Ken Stewart (Keyboard), and Sparrow Thompson (Drums).

After a countdown from ten to one, the band opened the show with the classic “Freedom Sounds” as usual.

They performed other classics, such as “Latin Goes Ska,” “James Bond Theme,” and of course the “Rock Fort Rock,” off the album “Ball of Fire”.

The band wrapped up the show with the well acclaimed “Guns of Navarone”. The public seemed pleased even though they wanted some more, but festivals schedules are tight.

After the show, we had the opportunity to interview Val Douglas (Bass). We talked about touring, working in studio, the increasing use of technology in music, Doreen Shaeffer, and more.

They finished their European tour in Germany at the Sunrise Festival, after passing by Italy and Spain. They are now on the road in the US.

Do not hesitate to leave a comment below to let us know if you have attended one of their shows recently, and watch out for the interview that is coming soon. More pictures are available on our Facebook page.
