This #FlashbackFriday, check out the “Freedom Blues Riddim”
Released in 1994, the “Freedom Blues Riddim” produced by Penthouse Records is a Reggae compilation featuring Tony Rebel, General Degree, Sanchez, Luciano, Terrie Ganzie and more. The collectors will probably recognize the characteristic melody of the triumphal horns in the introduction. Indeed, this version isn’t the original and very first release of the “Freedom Blues Riddim”.
One of the first cut of the “Freedom Blues” dates back from the 70’s. In 1976, Clement “Coxsone” Dodd, produced “Killer Man Jaro” performed by Dillinger on this riddim. This version didn’t feature the horns section yet a similar melody was played by the organ in the intro of the song. The same year, Bunny Lee Striker also dropped his version of the “Freedom Blues”, which features the single “MLPA” performed by Tapper Zukie. This cut is introduced by a sort of call and answer phrase between the Horns and the organ.
During the past decade this classic has been relicked, remade and sampled. One of my favorite cut on this riddim happens to be Cornell Campbell’s 70’s single “Jah Jah A Go Beat The Wicked”.
