Throwback of the week: “Fed Up Riddim”
It’s #ThrowbackThursday again, so let’s rock to some good old 90’s Dancehall. This week, I’ve picked the “Fed Up Riddim”, produced by Sly & Robbie for Taxi Records in 1996.Back then, Bounty Killer was singing: “poor people fed up”! and I must say it is kind of sad to come to the realization that nearly 20 years later, the situation is still pretty much the same. Anyway we’re not here to discuss politics but music.The riddim starts with a grainy trumpet sample followed by an indian-flavored uptempo bass line (also sampled in the “Tabla Riddim”), which will later pop up from time to time and set the pace of the riddim. The “Fed Up Riddim” is mostly based on percussions, except that bass line and a horn sample, it gets you moving only thanks to a thumping drum beat and the flow of the artists.“Fed Up” by Bounty Killer might be the most famous track of the riddim, but I prefer “Bad Mind” by Capleton by far. Either way, both tracks are perfect examples consciously-aware Dancehall music, which is generally associated to slackness or music inciting to violence.“Bad mind it a go kill them. Envious it a go mad them. Tell them fi free up them conscious. And just like a rope it a go hang them.”The “Fed Up Riddim” is a quite nice riddim. It also features, General B, Merciless, Roundhead, Elephant Man, Harry Toddler, Red Dragon and Mega Plough.
