Albums

Buju Banton – Upside Down (Gargamel)

[Jump to: Play On Mr. Music – Black Ark Days]

In June 2020, Buju Banton issued his long-awaited new album. It’s his first album since he’s been released from jail in December 2018.

The album features a couple good Dancehall tracks such as “Blessed,” “Trust,” as well as the sweet Reggae fusion song “Memories” featuring John Legend. Yet, it’s not enough to make it a good album.

The album includes some sappy Modern Roots Reggae songs that sounds merely average. Despite being technically well produced, they just lack of originality. We expected a lot from this brand-new Buju Banton, since it was his first album released in 10 years.

Overall, it’s an average album from an artist of his stance. We can count very good songs that are featured on it on one hand… He should probably have stuck to Dancehall.

New New Riddim (Box Lunch Production)

The “New New Riddim,” produced by Box Lunch Production, is a pretty catchy Dancehall Riddim. It features artists such as Jah Thunder, Teflon, Zamunda, and less popular artists like J Love, and Rough Mux. It also features Capleton, who particularly goes hard on the riddim.

Hard Again Riddim (Payday)

[Jump to: Bambu Riddim]

The “Hard Again Riddim,” produced by Payday, is introduced by a rather soft piano, but then it switches to a totally different vibe as the heavy synth bass comes in.

This riddim is indeed a hardcore Dancehall riddim. It features Esco, Gappy Ranks, Kiprich, Sizzla, and more. Most oft the tracks sound good on this riddim.

Like on the “New New Riddim,” Capleton goes hard again with a tune titled after the riddim. Gappy Ranks delivers a pretty good track too with a very catchy chorus.

Bambu Riddim (Oneness Records)

[Jump to: Sean Paul – Bad Inna Bed]

The “Bambu Riddim,” produced by Oneness Records, is a recut of the “None Shall Escape Riddim,” popularized by Johnny Clarke‘s song of the same name.

It features artists like Mark Wonder, Luciano, Jesse Royal, Lutan Fyah, and many more.

Reggae Dancehall single tracks

Sean Paul – Bad Inna Bed (Troyton Music)

[Jump to: Konshens – Let Her Out]

During the past decade, we’ve been used to hearing Sean Paul deliver pop-oriented on EDM/Dancehall fusion beats most of the time. Though, from time to time, he dabbles into Jamaican Dancehall, voicing one of his own production (Dutty Rock Music) or one of his peers.

For instance, last month, he released a single titled “Bad Inna Bed,” produced by Troyton Music. Even though, it is voiced on a Modern Dancehall rhythm, it doesn’t sound overly commercial. Somehow, the international Dancehall star delivered quite a good song with a nice flow.

Konshens & Gold Up – Let Her Out (Evidence Music)

[Jump to: Chezidek – March]

“Let Her Out” is definitely not Konshens‘s best track of all time. Yet, it’s quite pleasant to listen to it. For this brand-new single, released on Evidence Music’s label, Gold Up teamed up with the French-based sound system Ride di Vibes, which has just entered the music production industry with this debut project.

Chezidek – March (Tad’s Records Inc.)

“March” was produced by Desbert ‘Chezidek’ Johnson and executive producers Tad A. Dawkins and Tad A. Dawkins Jnr. It’s the second single taken from Chezidek‘s upcoming album “Hello Africa,” due to be released on July 23rd, 2020.

The rhythm sounds decent despite the poor execution of the horn section, which was probably digitally produced. Nevertheless, Chezidek delivers a very good social commentary song. For this song, Chezidek hit lower keys than usual, which sort of highlights the depth of his message.
