80’s Throwback: The “Real Rock Riddim”, produced by Stone Love Records
While some of you were rocking at Reggae on the Rocks last night, I am kicking it back on the “Real Rock”. So, this sunday, I invite you to chill out with the 1988’s “Real Rock Riddim”, produced by Stone Love Records, featuring: Little John, Flourgon, Daddy Lizard, Michael Rutherford and Clement Irie.During the past decades, the “Real Rock Riddim” has been among the most remade riddims like the “Answer Riddim”, “Heavenless” or “Bam Bam Riddim.” More recently, it has been remade by Stone Love in 2005 and Flava McGregor in 2013. The oldest version of this riddim, that can be traced, dates from 1967/1968. It’s the “Real Rock” by Sound Dimension, produced by Clement “Coxsone” Dodd for Studio 1. It is a laid-back riddim characterized by the slightly jazzy melody of a nonchalant trumpet lead over an ostinato bass line. And the combination of it all is paced by a high-pitched syncopated organ lick.The 1988 Stone Love‘s cut is far less complex yet you can tell it is the “Real Rock”. Even though the trademark trumpet lead and organ lick are missing, the distinctive bass line lies there. The line up might not look as appealing as other riddims that were released the same year, since it doesn’t feature popular artists of this era such as Super Cat, Shabba Ranks or Yellow Man. Yet, it is a nice and enjoyable riddim. Take a listen and let us know what you think of it.
