There are certain Reggae Dancehall duos that you ought to know. Just like Tom wouldn’t exist without Jerry, or the other way around, a couple of artists and producers, who are now well established, have risen to popularity as part of a duo. Sometimes, the pair they formed was so inseparable in people’s minds that the name of one of the artists doesn’t ring a bell without the other one.So we’ve put up a little playlist of our Reggae Dancehall duos selection. Sly & Robbie
Lowell “Sly” Dunbar and Robert “Robbie” Shakespeare form one of the most emblematic duo of Reggae producers. A drummer and a bassist. Probably the best combination of instrumentalists when it comes to produce Reggae music. Since the 70’s, they have produced the “Heavenless Riddim”, “Baba Boom Riddim”, “Bam Bam Riddim” and many more.
Steely & Clevie
Wycliffe “Steelie” Johnson and Cleveland “Clevie” Brown formed another iconic Reggae duo of producers who were active since the 70’s until 2009. Together, they’ve produced a set of unforgettable Riddims as well, like the “Street Sweeper Riddim”, “Poco Man Jam”, “Taxi Riddim” just to name a few. Since, Steelie has passed away a couple of years ago, Clevie continues to produce music on his own.
Chaka Demus & Pliers
Active since the early 90’s, Chaka Demus & Pliers is one of the most popular Reggae Dancehall duo. They rose to popularity with R’n’B flavored crossover hits such as “Tease Me” and “She Don’t Let Nobody”. Nowadays, they are still touring all around the world to perform their most notable hits such as the aforementioned singles but also “Murder She Wrote”, “Twist and Shout” just to name a few.
Brian & Tony Gold
Shortly after the 1986 Tastee Talent Contest, winner Brian Derek Thomson and runner-up Patrick Anthony “Tony Gold” Morrison formed the duo known as Brian & Tony Gold. They might not be as famous as Chaka Demus & Pliers outside of Jamaica but the single “Compliments On Your Kiss” performed in collaboration with Red Dragon reached #2 in the UK singles charts in summer 1994.
Tanto Metro & Devonte
Tanto Metro & Devonte is a Reggae Dancehall duo often compared to Chaka Demus & Pliers. Both duos are formed by a deejay with a rough flow smoothed out by the silky vocals of a singer. Tanto Metro & Devonte started working together in the late 90’s. Their most notable act was the single “Everyone Falls in Love”, voiced on the “Up Close Riddim”.
Leftside & Esco
Craig “Leftside” Parkes and Matthew “Esco” Thompson started out as selectors. After trying their hands at producing, then recording, they became a well appreciated Reggae Dancehall duo in the early 2000’s. Since 2007, both artists pursue their own solo career as producers and recording artists.
Shaggy & Rik Rok
Shaggy and Rik Rok actually didn’t form a duo unlike the previous ones. But former Patra’s back singer Rik Rok is most known for his work featuring the grammy award winner artist such as “It Wasn’t Me”, “Bonafide Girl” and “Her Eyes”.
