Throwback of the week: We pay tribute to Ska pioneer Prince Buster

Born on May 24th 1938 in Kingston, Cecil Bustamente Campbell, best known as Prince Buster, recently passed away (September 8th, 2016). The man we all knew as a pioneer of Ska music in Jamaica, started as a sound boy in Clement ‘Coxsone’ Dodd’s “Downbeat”. During the 50’s, he set up a record store and launched his own sound system, “The Voice of The People”.

Then, he was one of the first to record local Jamaican artists such as the Folkes Brothers. He originated the trademark offbeat rhythmic style that was characteristic of Ska music. Prince Buster rose to fame internationally during the mid-60’s as Ska music started being praised by movements like Mods and Skinheads in the UK. “Madness” (1964) and “Al Capone” (1967) are two of the most notable acts of Prince Buster.

So this weekend, in order to pay tribute to the late pioneer of Ska music, we have gathered a 10-track pack featuring some of his most popular songs. I hope you’ll enjoy it. Do not hesitate to share and comment. Let us know what is your favorite track by Prince Buster.
