Interview with Chezidek, November 10th, 2017 in Marseille, France – Part 4/6: Apart from Reggae music
Do you listen to other genres of music apart from Reggae music?
Me listen all kind of music weh sound good. When it sound good, it move me.
Which artists do you like?
Some a American singers, some a them a African singers. Is not like one person that me could a say that. There’s a man me used to like, Al Green. Me like all a them deh. Them sing good. Me like them voice and them flow. Me like all the singers them. All the singers of the world, Reggae music, and Hip Hop, R’n’B, [Singing] anything.
And what do you think of Al Green becoming a Pastor?
Yeah man, good road man. Because, he could be a serial killer. [Laughs] Good move Father Al! Father Green! Good move!
Lieutnant Stitchie also became a pastor…
Yeah… Me nah do them thing. Me a more like singers. They touch me. Singers. But me like African singers like Fela Kuti. You know you have some nice African singers. Whole a them nice. Me love the voices. The nice singers like Lucky Dube them and Alpha Blondy them. Reggae deh you know, still.
But me love nuff a the R’n’B singer them, and the Hip Hop singer them man. You know them have a influence on Jamaican music. American r’n’B and Hip Hop music was a strong influence. If you listen them, most of our people want to be like them. Most of the singers they started out singing American R’n’Bs. Even me used to sing some of them song them.
When I was a youth, growing up, when them sing then the girls them go wild. [Laughs] Cause them know this hype record when I see them pon TV every day, I know them. So they haffi start out with them. Then they start. Then I said to myself “No. I can write songs like them. Me a write my own song.” Then I wrote my song. And my music teacher said no is not me. I was in grade 8, 13 years old. The teacher said “No, you didn’t write that song!” and me say “Yes, me write it.” So, she made me sing it in front of the whole class. All the girls say “No, you didn’t write that song!” I even recorded that song when I become a big man, and go sing for X-terminator Records.
What’s the song?
“Got To Be Love.” Got to be love, what else could it be? It couldn’t be nothing else. It got to be love. [Singing] Yeah, that song. You know. From me a youth me write that song.
Did you hear Macka B’s album, about food?
No, but I saw him on Youtube deejaying about, singing about “Cucumber, cu-cu-cu-cu-cucumber!” [Singing] Him bad, man. Me like him. Me like him style. Macka B a original man. Good style that. Healthy life style. Chezidek sing them way too sometimes.
Did you try any French food/dish?
No. Cause usually me just cook my own little thing deh. You know, little broccolis. Yeah me eat food that’s grown in France. Broccoli and vegetables that’s grown in France. So it’s French food but sometimes me prefer cook it if me can’t find someone who can deal with. Sometimes me have some nice clean people who know how to deal with vegetables food, cause I don’t eat no form of animal product. Me just eat vegetables. But a lot of food. I eat like a elephant.
Can you give me your favorite recipe?
Chezidek is a number one vegan chef. No, I tell you. If you cook some food for you now, you follow me around everywhere I go. You say “Papa, papa!” [Laughs] KFC and those places will never give you the recipe. [Laughs] Me can’t give you me secret. But is just vegetables and spices.
Combination of spices according to like artwork. Like you can already taste it. Me a go do this this this, put it together, bam with that. We got this. Boom! With the children. Cause I cook for children. Me have children, I cook for them. When them taste them say them want more, and more, and more! [Laughs]
You know how our thing work. Yeah man. Ital food, we make it taste nice cause we love food too. Very much. Food and ganja. Yes, me love them thing them more than me love beautiful queens, and you know what I mean. Me love to see the youths them grow. Me love the earth, and me love creation. Yeah man, me love Jah.
