Blue Beat presents “Pempelem” by Azie Lawrence, released in 1964
“Pempelem” is a 1964 UK Ska single, performed by Azie Lawrence, and produced by Blue Beat, a subsidiary record label of Melodisc Records. As Pempelem sold everything for cash, I am sure she could have helped Azie Lawrence sell some more records too. But we’re not here to discuss about that girl because this record sells off anyway. The offbeat piano swinging over the syncopated drum and bass beat, alongside the cheerful set of horns make the riddim sound truly catchy. The song is based on a call and answer pattern. Azie calls “Pempelem” and the horns answer. Overall, the track is very dynamic, and makes you want to sing along. This song is for the old school Ska lovers. It’s a great song someone recommended me that I’m sharing with you this weekend.
