Kendrick Lamar drops socially charged Hip Hop single “The Blacker The Berry” featuring Dancehall artist Assassin.
“The blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice”… Young rapper Kendrick Lamar openly denounces hypocrisy amongst black people. Alongside Dancehall artist Assassin aka Agent Sasco, he delivers an incendiary Hip Hop track. With an aggressive flow, they lay a set of raw unfiltered lyrics over a hardcore and dark Hip Hop beat.He highlights the fact that certain people amongst the black community adopt certain behaviors just to pretend they are really proud of being black. While criticizing a community gangrened by drugs, guns and violence, he pinpoints that the hatred comes from within and it doesn’t matter how “black” they are or try to appear. As Kendrick spat the very last word of the song: “hypocrite”, it turns into a whole different beat. The uncomfortable pressure just relieves. The dark beat has been replaced by a soulful beat featuring various soothing female samples. Leaving you thinking through this deep song. “The blacker the berry.”
I’m the biggest hypocrite of 2015.Once I finish this witnesses will just convey just what I mean.I mean is evident that I’m irrelevant to society. That’s what you’re telling me.Penitentiary would only hire me.[…]No matter how much I say I like to preach with the Panthers […]So why did I weep when Trayvon Martin was in the street,When gang banging made me kill a nigger blacker than me.Hypocrite!—Kendrick Lamar“The blacker the berry, the sweeter the juice”They treat us like a slave cause we black. How they feel whole heap a pain cause we black.I man a say them put we in a chain cause we black.A watch ya now, big old chain full of rocks.— Assassin
